An Unsingular Choice, 2022

Opioid addiction is a community crisis. It doesn’t take much to become addicted and more people are at risk than you might think. There are many tools available to help us assess our predisposition to opioid misuse. In many cases though, when it comes time to discuss pain management options with a care provider, we are unaware of our own risk factors or feel stigma and shame around conveying our medical histories to our doctor. This could be because we don’t want to be judged, think the information isn’t relevant, or a myriad of other reasons.

Our societal relationship with addiction and mental health has made it difficult for us to discuss and examine our own risk. This experience aims to create solidarity and communitas through a shared Opioid Risk Assessment, presenting often personal information as part of an anonymous whole, while providing gallery viewers with the tools they need to determine their own possibility of risk. The automation and anonymity of the installation acts as a direct contrast to intimacy and nuance garnered when discussing personal risk with a doctor or care provider.

Below is a standard opioid risk assessment, administered by doctors. It is simply a tool to know your options and make the best decision for you.
